MBBS/BDS Seats in India through NEET – The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), India’s premier medical undergraduate entrance exam, offers admissions to almost all the MBBS seats and to all the BDS seats offered by medical and dental institutions across the country.
‘Number of MBBS seats in India’ or ‘Total MBBS BDS seats in India’ are common search queries of many aspirants, as they naturally wish to know their chances of gaining admissions in the tough competition that marks NEET and the other two medical entrance exams, AIIMS MBBS and JIPMER MBBS.
Increase in MBBS/BDS seats in India
The Government of India has been attempting to raise the number of seats and colleges in MBBS and BDS through NEET year after year so as to increase the number of doctors working in the country’s rapidly growing healthcare sector. The MBBS and BDS seats available in some Indian states have already gone up compared to the 2017 MBBS/BDS admissions.
On March 23, 2018, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in reply to a question asked in the Lok Sabha about the number of MBBS/BDS seats allotted to state-run and private medical/dental colleges in India, informed the Parliament about the details of MBBS/BDS seats available in each state of India. The reply stated that presently, there are a total of 30,455 MBBS and 2,930 BDS seats available in state-run institutions and 36,165 MBBS and 24,130 BDS seats available in private medical/dental colleges in India.
The admission to MBBS/BDS courses in all medical/dental colleges, whether it be government or private (except for AIIMS and JIPMER institutions) takes place through NEET scores. NEET is an all India undergraduate medical examination conducted for admission to MBBS/BDS courses throughout the country. NEET 2018 is scheduled to be held on May 6, 2018.
A comprehensive state-wise list of total MBBS and BDS seats and colleges across India, segregated as per categories, including government, private, central, etc. is given in the tables below for the reference of candidates aspiring for admission in undergraduate (MBBS or BDS) courses of medical/dental colleges in India.

*Data given by MoHFW in Lok Sabha in reply to unstarred question number 4650 on March 23, 2018.
#Number of colleges is based on data provided on MCI official website for 2017-18 period and is subject to change.
**Figure given as ‘280’ in the Lok Sabha reply, which is erroneous as there approximately 19 private medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh a figure of 280 will give less than 15 MBBS seats per college on average. Data has thus been changed in accordance with that provided on the MCI website.
^The sum of total MBBS seats available in private colleges across India is given as ‘36,040’ in the Lok Sabha reply. However, when the MBBS private seats as given for individual states are calculated, the sum is ‘33,745’. This total has been further corrected after accounting the change in MBBS seats data of Andhra Pradesh private colleges.
$There is an inconsistency in the Lok Sabha and MCI data of the total number of MBBS seats available in the private medical colleges of Punjab. The Lok Sabha reply states that there are total 1,050 MBBS seats available in private colleges of Punjab, whereas both MCI and 2017-18 Punjab data indicate only 625 private MBBS seats in Punjab are available across 5 private medical colleges (including Deemed Universities). The source of Lok Sabha data for Punjab’s private MBBS seats is unavailable.
