AIIMS

The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are a group of autonomous public medical colleges of higher education. An Act of Parliament has declared these institutes like Institute of National Importance.

All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi was established as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament with the objects to develop patterns of teaching in Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of Medical Education in India; to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity; and to attain self-sufficiency in Post-graduate Medical Education.

The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research, and patient care. As provided in the Act, AIIMS conducts teaching programs in medical and paramedical courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and awards its degrees. Teaching and research are conducted in 42 disciplines. In the field of medical research, AIIMS is the lead, having more than 600 research publications by its faculty and researchers in a year. AIIMS also runs a College of Nursing and trains students for B.Sc.(Hons.) Nursing post-certificate) degrees.

Twenty-five clinical departments including four super speciality centres manage practically all types of disease conditions with support from pre- and Para-clinical departments. However, burn cases, dog-bite cases and patients suffering from infectious diseases are not entertained in the AIIMS Hospital. AIIMS also manages a 60-bedded hospital in the Comprehensive Rural Health Centre at Ballabgarh in Haryana and provides health coverage to about 2.5 lakh population through the Centre for Community Medicine.

AIIMS runs a variety of undergraduate courses in medicine, nursing, and related areas, and postgraduate courses in virtually all the basic and clinical medical specialities and super specialities. Admissions to these courses are based on entrance examinations conducted all over the country.

AIIMS New Delhi is governed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Act, 1956.

  1. AIIMS BHOPAL

AIIMS Bhopal is one of the seven AIIMS apex healthcare institutes which was established by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna(PMSSY). With the aim of correcting regional imbalances in quality tertiary level healthcare in the country, and attaining self-sufficiency in graduate and postgraduate medical education and training the PMSSY planned to set up 6 new AIIMS like institutions in underserved areas of the country.

AIIMS Bhopal launched its first academic department, community and family medicine (CFM) in September 2012. It AIIMS Bhopal formed the Institute Body (IB), the highest decision-making group in July 2013. Post graduation courses were started in January 2017.

       2. AIIMS BHUBANESWAR

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhubaneswar (AIIMS Bhubaneswar), formerly Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose All India Institute of Medical Sciences, is a medical college and medical research public university located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. The Institute operates autonomously under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and family welfare.

The first academic year was 2010–11 and it began on 21 October. The first batch of MBBS with 50 students was started on 21 September 2012. The Second batch of students for Undergraduate courses for the academic year 2013-14 joined in August 2013. The new batch consists of 100 students selected from all over India. Also, the 1st Nursing batch of 60 students was admitted in September 2013. The students are represented by the Students’ Union AIIMS Bhubaneswar, headed by an executive body that is elected every year from students of 6th semester voted by all the students of 2nd semester. The first Students’ Union got elected on 27 February 2015 after the first batch attended 6th semester and is headed by founder president Sambit Sagar and vice president Avnish Kumar Singh. The Students’ Union is credited with organising the first ever Inter AIIMS Inter Medics fest named CHIASMA 2K16 from February 4 to 7 acknowledging AIIMS Bhubaneswar as the first institution amongst its siblings to take such an initiative. The medi fest registered participation from medical students of different AIIMS along with medical students from state government and private medical colleges who showcased their talents from a plethora of different events.

         3. AIIMS JODHPUR

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Jodhpur (AIIMS Jodhpur) is a Medical college and medical research public university based in Jodhpur, India. Like five other All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), it was established in 2012 and operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and family welfare.

From 2013 onwards AIIMS started admitting 100 MBBS and 60 B.Sc Nursing(Hons.) students. Outdoor patient(OPD) services began at the AIIMS Jodhpur from July 27, 2013. AIIMS has started MD courses in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology and Community Medicine and Family Medicine departments from 2016. AIIMS Jodhpur started Postgraduate courses in 20 departments from 2017 with 56 seats.

        4. AIIMS PATNA

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Patna (AIIMS Patna) (officially Jayaprakash Narayan All India Institute of Medical Sciences) is a Medical college and medical research public university based in Patna, Bihar, India. AIIMS Patna is spread over 134 acres, comprising the main medical college campus on 100 acres and residential campus on 34 acres.

AIIMS Patna started its operations on 25 September 2012. AIIMS New Delhi, has been mentoring the two new in AIIMS Patna and Bhubaneswar, PGI Chandigarh has been mentoring AIIMS coming up in Rishikesh and Jodhpur, while JIPMER Puducherry has been overseeing the AIIMS in Bhopal and Raipur. Class of 2012 started in AIIMS Patna on 25 September 2012 with around 50 medical students had been admitted in AIIMS Patna. To start with, AIIMS Patna imparted training in four subjects to the 1st MBBS students– anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and community medicine. The first batch of students have completed their 41/2 years MBBS course and started their internship from January 2017. The institute also runs a 3 years BSc Nursing course, and has a separate nursing college building within its premises.

15 super speciality areas including cardiology, psychiatry, gastroenterology, nephrology (with dialysis), endocrinology and nuclear medicine have to be set up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana in AIIMS Patna.

        5. AIIMS RAIPUR

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Raipur is a Medical college and medical research public university located in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India. Established in 2012, it operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and family welfare.

    • The institute admitted its first batch of 50 MBBS students in September 2012. Since 2013 it admits 100 MBBS students per year.
    • The 930 bedded hospital is working since February 2014.
    • The Institute is currently operating as the leading tertiary care centre in the state of Chhattisgarh, with expert doctors from different branches of Medicine and Surgery continuously working to provide better healthcare services to the underserved population of Chhattisgarh.
  • Facilities available at AIIMS Raipur include low-cost medical care and treatment, state of art Operation Theatres, IPD services, Emergency Services*, AYUSH Services (to address the needs of patients through Ayurveda, Homeopathy, etc).

       6. AIIMS RISHIKESH

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Rishikesh (AIIMS Rishikesh) is a medical college, Hospital and medical research public university, based in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India. The Institute operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and family welfare.

      • AIIMS started its academic sessions in August 2012, in all, there are 50 students in the first batch of the MBBS career at the AIIMS Rishikesh.
      • The B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing course is started at the College of Nursing, AIIMS Rishikesh in the academic session of August, 2013.
      • The 200-bed hospital at AIIMS Rishikesh was inaugurated by the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on 10 February 2014.
    • MD/MS Course started in Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Community & Family Medicine, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Orthopaedics departments in July 2016.
    • Ph.D. Course started from July 2017 session.
